Camera Roll: Blind Doubles Swap
I did a film swap with a fellow film photographer and here's the results...
I became acquainted with Mia’s blind doubles work through Instagram (you can find her nationale7 on IG) and was immediately in love with her work. She specializes in doing film swaps with others, where she shoots a roll of film and then sends off to someone else to shoot over that same roll, creating blind doubles from two very different places and perspectives.
I’m constantly inspired by her work and I included her in a list of my favorite experimental film photographers to watch here. So of course, I wanted to do a swap with her ASAP. She shot a roll of Lomo slide film and sent to me and I shot a roll of film soup to send to her. I’m waiting on the results from the roll of film soup from Mia, but I was able to get the roll of slide film finished up and developed, so I wanted to share the results.
Of course, not every image is a winner, and at first glance I wasn’t sure there was much to love. But after sitting with them, going through with intention and adding some post editing, I have really come to love so many shots. The result was florals/botanicals and more from California shot by Mia mixed with scenes from my trip to Tofino, creating a unique juxtaposition of the two different scenes.
Thank you so much to Mia for swapping with me and I hope we get magic from the film soup roll as well. Regardless, it is such a fun experience and a way to challenge yourself to let go in your work. I highly recommend all my film photography friends try this out!
